Ref vac 10333 NEPAL - Vets and Nurses!! Volunteer in Nepal with a Street Dog Welfare Organization! The Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre (KAT Centre, www.katcentre.org.np) in Kathmandu, Nepal is seeking volunteer veterinarians, vet nurses, and vet students to work with our two vets and six animal care staff to provide treatment for street dogs and cats. ABOUT THE KAT CENTRE More than 20,000 dogs live on the streets of the city of Kathmandu, Nepal. Many suffer from starvation, infected open sores, mange, and rabies. The KAT Centre’s goals are to humanely create a healthy, stable dog population in Kathmandu and to eliminate rabies, which kills hundreds of people in Nepal every year. We are accomplishing this through a widespread street dog sterilization program, medical treatment for sick and injured dogs, vaccinations, and humane education. In the seven years since the KAT Centre was founded, we have sterilised over 40% of the female street dogs in Kathmandu, the canine population has decreased from approximately 31,000 to 22,500, and surveys show that people are more compassionate towards street dogs. The organisation’s impact goes far beyond the animals it treats. VOLUNTEERING AT THE KAT CENTRE As a volunteer at KAT, you will have opportunities to learn different approaches to veterinary medicine and help treat illnesses and injuries that are uncommon in developed countries. You will also be able to ride on KAT’s animal ambulances with staff who catch and release street dogs and respond to emergency rescue calls. Additionally, we hope you will share your knowledge and experience with our vets and other staff to help make sustained improvements to our procedures. We welcome volunteers for any amount of time, and no particular experience is necessary. Please come to the KAT Centre willing to adapt to the unpredictability of life in Nepal and the limited resources available. Since we don’t have a structured volunteer program, we encourage volunteers to take initiative to ask the staff how they can get involved.- Learn more about volunteering at the Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre at http://katcentre.org.np/volunteer/index.html
